It's less likely that artist will get another book deal but at least they're not in debt. If you get a $100,000 advance for a novel and it tanks the author doesn't have to pay it back. It's worth noting that the publishing industry doesn't work like this. I've never been in this situation myself. At the end of the contract this guy was in debt to the label $1.5 million. They signed a 3 album deal and the albums in total sold 1.5 million copies. I saw a panel at a convention once where the guy on the panel said that one of his best friends was in a popular band from the 80s, but he wouldn't name them. And keep in mind, that $100,000 is money the artist has been living on for however long the record has been in production. The artist must then pay back the other $80,000 to the label. So then your record goes on the market and it sells well enough to cover all the up front costs plus $20,000 of the advance. All of that money comes out of the royalties that they are supposed to pay the artist. As is recording, mastering, production, marketing, etc. Let's say you sign a deal with a record label for 2 albums for $100,000 (just throwing numbers out, I have no idea what real deals are worth), that money is an advance on your royalties, but it's also a recoupable expense for the label. This is common, especially with the major labels. and please, contact us if you have any suggestions/feedback as to how we can improve, or if you’d like to get more involved with, the subreddit. again though, this is still not a place for actual music submissions, so none of that now!.ask questions, share your insights on a topic, rant about something, describe a project you’re working on, ….if linking to a video, document, or other media please do add a tag, such as:, , or, after the title as a heads-up to other readers.if the source title includes the name of the site please remove it.avoid adding commentary (that’s what comments are for right?).title modifications should be made only if titles are overly-ambiguous.When submitting links, please try to keep titles true to those from the source an editorial, opinion piece, or interesting take on a topic that adds value) feel free to submit-ahead!
